Οι γλαυκίδες ή στριγγίδες είναι ή μία από τις δύο οικογένειες κουκουβάγιων. Η δεύτερη είναι οι τυτονίδες.
Οι γλαυκίδες είναι μία μεγάλη οικογένεια πτηνών που περιλαμβάνει περίπου 220 ζώντα είδη χωρισμένα σε 23 γένη. Οι κουκουβάγιες της οικογένειας των γλαυκιδών ή στριγγιδών συναντώνται σε όλες τις ηπείρους, εκτός από την Ανταρκτική.
Ενώ οι "τυπικές" κουκουβάγιες διαφέρουν σημαντικά στο μέγεθος, με το μικρότερο είδος (elf owl) να είναι 12-14 εκ και το μεγαλύτερο (ευρασιατικός μπούφος) να είναι 75 εκ, έχουν όλες παρόμοιο σχήμα σώματος.
Έχουν μεγάλα κεφάλια, μικρές ουρές, σκούρο φτέρωμα και κυκλικούς περιοφθαλμικούς δίσκους στο πρόσωπο.
Τα φτερά τους είναι μεγάλα, φαρδιά, στρογγυλά και μακρά.
Όπως συμβαίνει με τα περισσότερα αρπακτικά πουλιά, στις περισσότερες κουκουβάγιες τα θηλυκά είναι μεγαλύτερα από τα αρσενικά.
Οι στριγγίδες ζουν κυρίως στα δέντρα (με λίγες εξαιρέσεις όπως η υπόγεια κουκουβάγια) και κυνηγούν την τροφή τους πετώντας.
